Don’t Let Online Costume Scams Haunt Your Halloween: Tips from the FTC

Halloween is just around the corner, and while you might be worried about finding the perfect costume, there’s something even scarier lurking online… scams. How about ordering a costume online and never getting what you paid for? Scammers are making this season extra spooky by pretending to be real companies like Spirit Halloween and Party City. But it’s all a trick. Here’s what to know.

You might spot an ad on Facebook or Instagram advertising an unbelievable “90% off” clearance sale from a well-known costume store. The ad looks real, complete with familiar logos and branding, but it’s actually a fake, placed by scammers. If you order, you could receive a counterfeit or damaged item, something completely different from what you ordered, or nothing at all.

So, how can you protect yourself when shopping for Halloween costumes, decorations, or party supplies online? The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) offers these important tips:

Double-check the source: Scammers can easily copy logos and company names. If you’re unsure about an ad, go directly to the retailer’s official website by typing the address yourself, don’t click on links from ads or emails.
Do your research: Before making a purchase, search the company’s name along with the word “scam” to see if others have reported issues.
Use a credit card: If you’re scammed, your credit card company can help you dispute the charge and recover your money.
