How do you open a savings account for a child?
+
—
For a student savings account, you can start the account opening process through our online application, with one of our Digital Bankers, or by visiting your local branch. Custodial (UTMA) accounts can be opened with a Digital Banker or at any D.L. Evans Bank branch. Some required documents you will need include:
The child’s Social Security number
The child ’s birth certificate or another form of identification
A parent or legal guardian’s valid photo ID (such as a driver’s license)
Proof of address for the parent or guardian
After the application is complete, you will just need the minimum opening deposit, which is only $10 for either type of student account.
When should I start a savings account for my child
+
—
Starting a savings account for your child at an early age is always a good idea. Whether your child is a newborn, toddler, or just beginning school, opening a savings or custodial account can establish a solid financial base for their future. By saving early, you can benefit from interest growth over time, and it provides your child with the chance to learn important money management skills as they mature.
What is the difference between a student savings account, a regular savings, and a Custodial (UTMA) account?
+
—
Student Savings Account: A student savings account is designed specifically for student savers of any age or grade. The D.L. Evans Bank student savings account features a lower minimum balance requirement, no monthly service fees, and a lower opening deposit.
Regular Savings Account: A regular savings account is available to customers of any age and provides a safe place to save money while earning interest. These accounts may have higher minimum balance requirements and could include monthly service fees but may have additional services or features associated with them.
Custodial (UTMA) Account: A Custodial Account, also known as a UTMA (Uniform Transfers to Minors Act) account, is managed by an adult (the custodian) for the benefit of a minor. The custodian controls the account until the child reaches the age specified by Idaho or Utah law. UTMA accounts are commonly used to save for a child’s future expenses, such as college or a first car, and the funds legally belong to the minor.

What is the advantage of having a savings account?
+
—
A savings account offers several important advantages for managing your finances. First, it provides a safe and secure place to set aside money for future needs, emergencies, or specific goals—such as a vacation, a new car, or education expenses. At D.L. Evans Bank, your savings are federally insured up to the allowable limits, giving you peace of mind.
Additionally, savings accounts earn interest, helping your money grow over time without any risk to your principal balance. Having a separate savings account also makes it easier to track your progress toward your financial goals and avoid the temptation to spend funds that are meant to be saved.
With many different types of savings accounts we have one to fit your financial goals.
Do savings accounts earn interest?
